Science Experiments

This evening Hannah decided she wanted to do some experiments from her Junior Science book, so after looking through to find out what we actually had the ingredients for, we came up with these:

Take a bowl of milk at room temperature, add a drop or two of food colouring to the centre and then drip in some washing up liquid. The washing up liquid causes the water to swirl around making patterns with the colouring.

Next Hannah added oil to a bowl of water to see the oil float (she also added food colouring and ice cubes because "it was more fun" lol)

Making a water xylophone:

Add different amounts of water to same sized jars and tap the jars with a pencil to hear the different notes. We tried this with and without lids to hear the difference.

Bicarbonate Of Soda and Vinegar Volcano: Well, not actually a volcano as we just mixed it in a bowl, but Hannah loved the fizzy foam it made. We are going to try it again using a bottle inside an earth volcano shape to get a better reaction.

We've had another beautiful day here today. Hannah went out riding this morning and had a lovely time. She rode over Portsdown hill which separates Portsmouth city and the suberbs from open farmland and gorgeous countryside. The bridleway she rode along runs along the top of the hill behind Fort Widley and you can see for miles towards the villages of Denmead and Southwick. Today Hannah spotted lots of butterflies, birds and wild flowers on her ride.

Book Sharing Monday

I've been persuaded to join book sharing monday after reading Gina's lovely blog, and seeing all the books everyone is sharing, so here is our first one - chosen by Hannah.

Sugar Snow, by Laura Ingles Wilder is from a series called My First Little House Books, which are especially adapted from the Little House On The Prairie books to appeal to the younger reader. Hannah loves them and is collecting the whole series.

"Spring was coming to the Big Woods. For days the sun shone and the weather was warm. All day the icicles fell one by one from the little house into the snowbanks."

.....while i have been painting her dolls house. It had started to look a bit tatty and needed cheering up so Hannah chose this lovely lilac colour.

Painting and Play

After so many quiet days (mummy is still not feeling so well), Hannah really needed to run off some energy today, so we went to the park and played (well, Hannah and her daddy played while i watched!!) They had a really nice time and Hannah ran and ran and ran.................she loves being outside.

After the park Hannah wanted to do something creative, so we got out her paints and she spent a happy hour creating some new master pieces.

A Visit from Grandad and Grandma Heather

Today we have spent the day with my dad and his wife, who arrived from France last night and stopped en route to Wales to visit us.

Hannah was so excited to see them, and even happier when my dad taught her to make an origami cat and a Chinese Junk, she has put them in her special treasure box to keep forever :-)

Before they arrived we looked on the map to see where they were coming from (Lot, in Southern France) and Hannah was amazed at how far my dad had driven (710 miles) to see her. She had a really lovely day, and is already looking forward to the next visit!
