Victorian Science

This week we went back to The City Museum for another of their 'Out To Lunch' activities. This time it was Victorian Science and Hannah and her friends made telephones from paper cups and string, and learned all about the different ways secret messages were sent.

She had a really fun time!

New Books

Hannah has been really enjoying reading the American Girl historical books that we have, so this week we bought three more. She is really pleased with them.

We have Felicity who is 9 years old and living in Colonial Williamsburg in 1774, Kirsten who is a 9 year old pioneer girl from Sweden living in 1854 and Julie, a 9 year old living in San Francisco in 1974.

We can't wait to start reading them!

Tennis!

Hannah has been bitten by the tennis bug! She was interested last year and watched most of Wimbledon on TV, and then this year after Wimbledon followed by the Olympic tennis, she asked me to give her a few lessons to see if she was brave enough to join a squad. After two lessons from me we found a junior beginners squad which is just perfect for her. It's a 10 minute walk from our house, is only £2 a week and her friend Melissa is going as well !!

She was super excited to start yesterday!!

So excited that we arrived early and she practised hitting the ball up and down outside the courts!

Look at that face! She LOVED it!!

Hannah and Melissa after the lesson! They are both really looking forward to next week!

Oh, and finally here is Hannah's goofy 'cool tennis dude' pose .......just because I think she's cute!

A Bowl Of Oobleck..........

.............equals hours of entertainment !!

Summer Reading Challenge and Back To (Home) School Workbooks!

Hannah has joined the Summer Reading Challenge at two different libraries this year. One with Hampshire Libraries at Fareham and the other with Portsmouth City Libraries at our local library.

She is really enjoying the books she borrowed from Fareham, rather brilliantly they had a huge collection of pony stories there!

At the Portsmouth library she chose a selection of books she hadn't tried before and so far her favourite is The Secret Seven!

If you'd like to read a bit more about the Summer Reading Challenge there is a website all about it here Summer Reading Challenge 2012

Last week I also ordered a few workbooks to get us back to school next month, and they arrive a couple of days ago.
We used the Math grade 2 last year and Hannah got on well with it. The books are short so I was able to add to them with printables and worksheets where needed. I find that suits Hannah's style of learning well so we are sticking with that plan for this year.

I bought Grade 3 Basic Math, Grade 3-4 Language Arts and Grade 3-4 Spelling Puzzles.

A sneak peek at Language Arts

Spelling Puzzles

Math
We are fairly autonomous with our learning style, so Hannah is going to choose some topics she would like to look at and I still need to find some fun science for her to do. Any recommendations anyone??

Swans, French, Circus Skills and an Olympic Torch!

A bit of a mish mash of things in this post as none of them really warranted their own post!

Over the last few days we have visited the swans and sygnets on Baffins Pond,

Hannah has had her final French taster class, and this week she was brave enough to take part in a cafe role play. Here she is playing the part of the waitress!

And today we have been to The City Museum, where Hannah and her friend Oscar joined in with their 'Out To Lunch' program and learned circus skills

They had heaps of fun trying all the new skills, and were both interviewed by the local paper !

Afterwards we wandered into Southsea shopping area and discovered that the bank there was raising money for charity by offering the chance to have a photo taken with the olympic torch, so here is Hannah with the torch!!

It was much bigger and heavier than she expected and apparently quite exciting :-)

Summer Session at Nicholson Gardens

As our usual Homeschooling Group activities have finished now for the summer,  we met up this week at a church hall and gardens instead for a day of fun and socialising.

It was organised by one of the mums from our group (she who also ran the mini olympics!) and was lovely.

 Hannah especially enjoyed scooter racing,

a dressing up race which was held over from the mini olympics as we ran out of time last week!

Eating lunch with her new Build-a-Bear 'Rainbow'.

                             Hoola-hoop games,

and she really, really liked being part of a huge Nerf Blaster Battle!!

It was a very successful day :-)
