Geography UK - USA

Hannah recently received The Barefoot Books World Atlas (thank you Grammy!) and has been using it to help with her geography.

Today we downloaded some UK and USA worksheets and she answered the questions and labelled the maps using her new book.

Happy 80th Birthday Grandad

Yesterday was my dad's 80th birthday. My sister and I did a special birthday lunch for him at my house, my mum came and helped out with the food and celebrated with us, Hannah played 'Happy Birthday' on the keyboard (she had been practising for ages to get it right!) and we had a really nice time.

My dad has been through so much in the last 4 months, and has done so well, and come so far - we are all really, really proud of him!

Pictures From The Stables

Hannah rode on Friday. She rode Dillon again and is getting on really well. She is able to be much more determined with him now when he messes her around (he's a cheeky little pony who likes to try his luck!) and is really gaining confidence. I've already posted a million pictures of her riding him so here are some yard pictures.

Dillon looking pretty muddy!

It really is Dillon despite saying Patrick on the door!

Zip Wire Fun

Hannah had a great time on Wednesday at the adventure playground. She spent all afternoon hanging out with her friends on the zip wire and playing on the huge slide!

A Great New Math Book

Hannah is a big American Girl fan and already enjoys using their Writing Smarts book to help with her language arts, so she was really pleased when I found Math Smarts on Amazon!

It's really great - fun, helpful and full of confidence giving tips and tricks!

I would definitely recommend it to any AG fans if you can get hold of a copy!

Victorian Farming Diorama

In history group this week we looked at Victorian farming and discussed how farming changed during the Victorian era. We talked about the kind of jobs children would have done on the farm, and how different a Victorian farm would have looked compared to a modern day farm.

Then the children all made shoe box dioramas of a Victorian farm scene.

Hannah drew a shepherds hut with sheep, made a clay plough for her horse to pull and made tiny hay ricks for her field.

She loved making the diorama, so I think this is something we will be doing a lot more of!

Bushcraft At Swanick Nature Reserve

On Thursday Hannah attended a bushcraft workshop at Swanick Lakes. We had never been before and discovered that it is a really beautiful place to go walking.

The day started with the children learning about fire and learning how to light their own fires safely in nature. They all used sparkers to light cotton wool after collecting kindling, and made a group fire.

After the firelighting activity the children moved on through the woods to the bug hunting area where they learned about all the different bugs that live in the woods.

Then it was time for lunch!!
The afternoon was all about shelter. The children worked in teams to build the best, most water tight shelter they could.

Hannah worked with her friends Ellen, Rachel and Lucy and with help from Dean and Lucy's mum they made a really good shelter!

Once the shelter was built the teams all crawled inside and the session leaders checked them for watertightness by throwing water over them!!

The girls got a little splashed, but were pretty pleased overall.

Here is Lucy's mum posing in her funky hat.............................just because lol!!

Team Girl posing in front of their den.

Taking a break!

And finally, the whole group after a brilliant day!!

A Winter Daytime Camp

Yesterday Hannah's best friend Melissa came over with her family. Hannah was desperate to get the tent out, so despite the freezing temperature and not quite thawed snow, we put the tent up in the winter sunshine.

The girls and Melissa's brother Oliver, played in the garden for ages until it got too cold to stay out any longer.

They are now busily planning a secret birthday campout in the garden for Hannah's birthday in May!!
